Legacy

The home for terms in the forum version of the glossary that are not necessarily relevant to the current day StageSoc.

BACS

Original Location: General Terms
The Bankers' Automated Clearing Services. Not really a theatre term, but referred to so often that it's necessary to put here - it's the way of transferring money online.

Demux Unit

Original Location: Lighting
Not seen much nowadays as it is often intergrated into the dimmer or hard-wired and hidden in a dimmer rack. Device that changes analogue signals to dmx (digital) signals. Analogue cables used to take 6 channel signals in the same size cable that now takes 512 channels signals. You can think of it as the lighting equivalent of a set-top box.

Houselights

Original Location: Lighting1)
The standard lights you have on while the audience are coming in and out of the auditorium. These are usually a couple of floods (in Arts H's case: BEWARE - always use a gel mesh on them, and be prepared for people going “there's a burning smell”. Don't dismiss it as being dust because the lanterns haven't been used for a while! You'll have lots of fun trying to hack the gel off the mesh, since it has melted itself on. Getting the mesh frame out of the floods seems to be harder than you'd expect!)

Michael George

Original Location: General Terms
A legend. Founder and (naturally) former member of StageSoc known for his talents at building set, singing, driving vans, producing and stage managing. Also owner of a large quantity of useful kit and a fountain of knowledge about the University/Union and ways of solving various back-stage technical type problems. Also the owner of the “yellow bag of wonders” formerly containing many useful things that everyone else forgot to buy (such as gaffa tape, LX tape, cable ties, bungee cord, ratchet straps, screws, screw driver bits…)

Milky White

Original Location: General Terms
Almost as much of a legend as Michael George, Milky White was a wooden white cow on wheels, and an infrequent visitor to the Isle of Wight before her final blaze of glory. No, really.

Talking / Moving Props

Original Location: General Terms
An affectionate term for actors used sometimes by crew when in a good mood.

1)
This term is still in the original location but with a significantly altered definition
